Pinpointing air pollution from space

For the first time, air pollution from individual cities and built-up areas can be detected from space. The European Sentinel-5 Precursor Earth observation satellite sends ultra precise measurement data to ground stations in Norway and Canada.

Boosting ultra-sensitive microscopes

Using the HPC Cloud, a new strategy has been developed to make microscopes more sensitive, helping with the study of living organic substances (such as cancer cells).

Proteomics project faster with grids and lightpaths

The research field of proteomics contributes to important new medical insights, producing vast amounts of data along the way.  To convert these massive amounts of proteomics data into knowledge requires dedicated computing and storage capacity.

Using big data solutions to solve the mystery of worm behavior

To study the strategies animals use to navigate the world around them, researchers analyse the behaviour of roundworms to create a model system. The project faced a number of data challenges that threatened to hold the team back from their scientific goal.

Dear cultural heritage conservationists, please relax – the MOLAB van is on its way

When artworks are too fragile to be moved, you have to come to them. The MOLAB team helps art historians and conservationists study fragile artefacts with hi-tech non-invasive equipment.

Closer to the “Holy Grail” of medical diagnosis

The ‘Holy Grail’ of medical diagnostics is an imaging technique that allows screening, diagnosis and monitoring of the progress of disease without damaging tissue or harming the patient. Processing and analysing large amounts of research data and collaboration between researchers play a central role.

Recording history through daily news streams

Enlighten Your Research is a programme that supports researchers from all research disciplines to give a boost to their research. Processing and analysing large amounts of research data and collaboration between researchers play a central role. One of the projects that is supported by Enlighten Your Research is 'Recording history through daily news streams'.

eduVPN – securing your privacy when you are out and about

Free Wi-Fi is a luxury we have come to expect at cafes, airports, on commuter trains or in the hotel we are staying at. But are you actually aware of how vulnerable you are when you are using a public Wi-Fi hotspot?

A virtual “data house” for genomics researchers

Genome researchers in the Netherlands work closely together in the field of omics data (such as genomic and metabolomic data). To ensure the data can be shared easily and securely, E-LAN network technology is being piloted in a shared network environment.

Research data zones improve collaboration on crop genome data

The University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and SURF are collaborating on a campus network infrastructure optimized for sending research data. The aim is to create a blueprint for an architecture to help researchers collaborate on data-intensive research. The first use case is focusing on crop genome data.

How data can improve the quality of higher education

Big data are found in all segments of society. Even the Dutch higher education sector is increasingly recognising the potential for the vast volumes of data that it has at its disposal. What opportunities does learning analytics offer? And what challenges are the early adopters facing? Are there any runners out there who still do not track their performance with an app?

Underground lava lake spotted by supercomputer

A lake of lava lies directly below a small South Korean island. The simulations that led to this discovery were performed on supercomputer Piz Daint at the Swiss National Supercomputing Center and the now decommissioned Huygens, the national supercomputing center of SURF in the Netherlands.
