OMREN, the national research and education network of Oman, has successfully implemented the eduroam (education roaming) service.
Eduroam is a wireless roaming service that provides free Internet access to the global research and education community.
OMREN, a part of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation (MoHERI), has deployed eduroam in 32 universities, colleges, and research centres across the Sultanate of Oman. The service allows students, researchers, and academics across the sultanate to obtain internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply connecting and using the same credentials used in their home institution, regardless of location worldwide.
“With the support of strategic partners and authorities concerned, OMREN will work to expand the service nationwide for the benefit of the Omani research and education community with an aim to created extended virtual campuses and offer users multiple options to go online and connect to their institutions,” says Warda Al Habsi, Acting Director of OMREN.
According to OMREN statistics, the eduroam service was used more than 500,000 times by students and researchers during its first active year, 2021.
