Since 2011, the Network of Digital Cinemas (Cinemas em Rede) has explored the possibilities opened up by computer networks and the Internet for distributing and expanding access to cultural materials, especially Brazilian audiovisual production. It is important to keep in mind that Brazil has less than 3,500 movie theatres, with less than 10% of the country’s municipalities having this type of cultural equipment. However, RNP, the Brazilian academic network is present in more than 1500 locations nationwide, and this has enabled new opportunities for expanding access to cultural materials through screenings on university campuses, as well as endowed the country with the technical and human resources necessary for research and experimentation initiatives in the field of digital cinema.
